The shining golden light drew Regg from her sleep and she held a hand to shade her eyes, blinking and glancing around the cavern. Her gaze stopped on the woman in black leaning on the rock wall a few feet away. When she saw Regg was awake, the woman stood up and pointed to Regg’s bandaged leg.

“You’re in rough shape, spearmaiden.”

Regg glanced down at her leg and shrugged. “I’ve had worse. It will heal.”

The woman in black nodded. “It is not your fate to die in this cavern, Reginleif. You have a great work to do.” She looked over at Guinevere, Revan and Eustace. “You will lead them to safety.”

“Even him?” Regg said, looking at Eustace.

The woman in black’s gaze lingered on the wild man for a long moment before she nodded. “All lives hold value to the Fates,” she said. “For who knows where the strand of one life ends and another begins — the Oond connects us all.”

Regg frowned. “I don’t understand what you’re saying.”

The woman in black let out a soft laugh. “Such is the fate of the Volva Avlov, to speak and not be heard.”

Hearing the name, Regg shuddered, eyes growing big. “The Black Norn,” she gasped.

Beneath her deep hood, the woman nodded. “Very good. I had to take a much more…direct approach with your friend.”

Regg fought the urge to run as the woman knelt down by her. Bowing her head, the Black Norn reached for her hood with pale hands.

“I will show you the way.”

Raising her head at the same time she pulled back her hood, two eyes of endless gold consumed Reginleif and the Valkyrie screamed.
